Is It Possible to Speed Up the Tattoo Healing Process?

While there are no magical tricks to heal your new tattoo overnight, there are a few tattoo care instructions that can help heal your tattoo in the shortest amount of time possible. These tips, coupled with the best tattoo aftercare products from Aftershock Skin Care, will have your skin feeling smooth and your tattoo healed in just a few weeks.

Keep the Initial Wrap on Overnight

After your tattooing session is complete, your tattoo artist will wrap or cover your tattoo with a protective barrier. The minimum amount of time you should keep this wrap on is two hours, but we recommend keeping the dressing on overnight. This tattoo care instruction protects your tattoo from airborne bacteria that can cause infection, may decrease your chances of scabbing, and protects your bedsheets from tattoo ink stains.

Cleanse Your Tattoo Gently

After removing the tattoo dressing, you’ll need to wash your tattoo at least twice a day to keep it clean and prevent infections. Wash your hands thoroughly before washing your tattoo, use a gentle, natural cleanser like Aftershock Skin Care’s Foam Soap, and don’t scrub too hard on your tattooed skin. Once you’re finished cleaning your tattoo, let it dry for 10-15 minutes before applying any tattoo ointment.

Never Let Your Skin Dry Out

Once your skin is dry, apply a thin layer of Aftershock Skin Care’s all-natural Body Balm to keep your tattoo hydrated. While your tattoo artist may recommend that you only apply this a couple of times a day after washing your tattoo, you should keep your Body Balm with you to apply any time you notice your tattoo starting to dry out. This will prevent excessive peeling and keep your skin from becoming itchy.

Avoid Irritants

While you want to minimize peeling and scabbing, it’s an inevitable part of the tattoo healing process. For this reason, we’re also including tattoo care instructions that pertain to what you shouldn’t do in order help your tattoo heal faster.

In general, you should avoid exposing your tattoo to too much heat or light. This includes sun exposure, tanning beds, hot tubs, and baths. You should also avoid applying anything to your skin that’s scented or contains chemicals that will irritate your skin. Perfume, scented lotion, sunscreen, sunless tanner, and makeup are good examples of products to avoid.

Don’t Touch Your Tattoo

Last, but certainly not least, your ongoing tattoo care instruction is to avoid touching your skin unless you are cleaning it or applying your Body Balm. Don’t scratch your skin when it starts itching, don’t pick at any scabs, and don’t peel away flaking skin. The less you mess with your tattoo, the less irritated it will be and the faster it will heal. If your skin is irritated, itchy, or inflamed, try our Hydrating Spray with Pro-Vitamin B5 to soothe the discomfort.
